Windows Live Writer –Review

I have been blogging for quite a time now(though not very regular) ,posting using the in browser way provided by the host . Got to know about windows live writer and tried it today . I really liked it , in fact this post i am writing in live writer only- it rocks .

Live writer makes the bloggers life so much easier .Things i liked are :-

1)As its offline desktop application , its fast-no more waiting for the post to be loaded in the browser to edit it .

2)Provides many editing features including spell check etc.

3)We can add photos, videos albums, all .They are uploaded to net(as per the set option ) when you publish the post .

4)Much more flexibility with photos –their positioning, size .In Blogger web interface you can only put photos in predefined position and sizes(if you are not editing html ).

5)A simple manager for all your blogs in one place . Type a post and publish it in whichever blog you want .

6)Preview Feature is good .When you add new blog , it downloads the template , so no net connection needed to preview your post ,thus very interactive

The best thing is –Its Simple and Saves a lot of time .

Steps to follow when some particular site is not opening

You are surfing the net, viewing sites, doing all your regular stuff. You stumble upon a site that is not opening . what to do ?? Or a particular site is not opening , which used to work fine sometime before .

I faced the same problem . Was not able to open www.wordpress.com from my lappy . After googling a lot , found some fixes to save your day :P .

Fix 1: Check your Windows HOSTS file - Make sure there’s no entry in the hosts file that maps the website’s address to localhost or an incorrect IP address like 127.0.0.1 – it is a possibility if you have imported some third-party hosts file.

cmd /k notepad c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Fix 2: Find Faults in the Pipeline – Paypal website may be up and running but it is possible that the real problem lies with a router that is between you and the computer hosting the Paypal website. Do a traceroute and check for messages like “Request Timed Out” – they will help you find the location of the breakdown.

Type the following command in the Run Window:

cmd /k tracert www.paypal.com – remember to replace Paypal with address of the website that is unreachable.

Fix 3: Clear DNS Cache – The DNS cache keeps a record of sites that you have recently visited on your computer. If that gets corrupted, you may have issues opening sites that were previously accessible without problems.

Type cmd /k ipconfig /displaydns in the Run window to see the cache entries. If that unreachable website is listed in the cache, type cmd /k ipconfig /flushdns to clear the cache.

Fix 4: Website May Be Blocked – The chances are rare but it is possible that access to some particular website may be have been restricted by the Office firewall. To test this, send an email to www@web2mail.com with the problematic website URL in the subject field. If the website is up, you will get a text copy of the web page in an email message.

Fix 5: Suspend the Anti-Virus and Firewall – If you are running an external software firewall or anti-virus program (like Norton, ZoneAlarm, etc), exit and restart the web browser. Is the problem solved now ?

When nothing works, open 192.168.1.1 and reboot the modem. If that fails, restart your computer and as a final step, call your ISP support.

Ubuntu's New Look ;)

If you have seen the old look of ubuntu ,as you can see , i have tweaked it again .This time its rather better than the earlier one.
Most improtant things to notice about it are Deskbar, Global menu and the theme (ofcourse) .I havent put any screenlets ,i dont like them .screenlets are good for nothing except for resource eating (some may argue they look cool :-P) .
You can customize it more by adding conky .I will add conky soon on my lappy .

The best part of the whole look is Global menu. It gives you more functionality, and a cleaner look to your applications + More space for the application in desktop. And obviously it looks cool .

Well it would be hard for my fingers to type in the tutorial , rather just download the mac4lin theme from :-
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac4lin/
And the PDf of Official tutorial from :-
http://nchc.dl.sourceforge.net/project/mac4lin/mac4lin/ver.1.0/Mac4Lin_1.0.1_Documentation.pdf

And if you want to put in conky well search the net for it :P
I will be adding in A tutorial for conky here soon .

My Ubuntu's "Old" Look

This was the earlier look of my ubuntu :

Above is the snapshot of my latest desktop .Isnt it Cool ? Without going into technical details ,let me point out some special things .First is at the right , displaying all specifications of my pc ,dynamically .Moreover i can change every thing there by just a small script . Next is the cool look of the boring terminal . and if u noticed , kde apps on ubuntu(amarok and ol ). I have kde installed on ubuntu too :-) ,Never forget noticing the panels and system theme .

Mind you for all this , i havnt put much of extra resourse hungry apps. So not much loss in ubuntu speed . In fact for all practical purposes , loss of resources is negligible . You can say a perfect balance of look(eye candy) and performance.
There's another snapshot here :-

May be i will write a tutorial to get this kind of look for ubuntu .

Block Websites From Opening

Do you need to block any site from beeing accessed on your computer . Or want to keep check on ur children from accessing explicit content ,or just to play the trick on peers. Watever may be the reason ,this is a good trick , which dont require any firewalls or site bloacking software . Just do this

Block WebSites in Windows XP:

1. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

2. Find the file named “HOSTS” .

3. Open it with Notepad.

4. Add 127.0.0.2 www.sitenameyouwantblocked.com , below 127.0.0.1 localhost line and that site will no longer be accessible.

On Linux goto /etc/hosts

My Ubuntu Guide

UBUNTU - Linux for human beings..........

And surely it is .For long linux(or Unix) have been considered as one for those extra technical geeky guys, and almost unusable for people layman . I got to know bout linux in my first year of engineering and it seemed very exciting and challenging . I started up experimenting with different distributions of linux ,and believe me i almost tried every flavour of Unix from fedora to slack , Damn small linux to solaris ..etc..etc..etc. With some help from my friend UJ i finally ended up using ubuntu .At first sight its GUI didnot generate much interest in me (cant compare GUI of linux with WINDOWS) .But after spending some days with ubuntu it seemed to me perfectly complementing its tagline .....Linux for human beings ..

Ubuntu ships with some great and important applications for daily use . It comes preinstalled with itunes like rhythem box music player, movie player ,sound recorder etc.It uses firefox as default webbrowser . For chat client it comes preinstalled with pidgin .Imagine being able to chat to your frnds ...one on google, other msn , third on yahoo ....simultaneously from the same place .Pidgin does this for you. There is Open office ,a good substitute for ms office .And these all r free.No body is going to charge u for a single penny.

There are so many things I can talk about ubuntu , but have to restrict myself to some specific things.Inspite of having one of the best GUI to work with in Linux, one can realise the real power of linux in command line . For all those budding techies and geeks , ubuntu offers a great chance of learning as it makes doing things so simple , and also supports with its excellent forums . Ubuntu forums are the most used forums in all linux distros , so u r bound to get all your queries resolved.

This was all a introduction to ubuntu ....

I will be updating it...........

userinit.exe

Well i have seen many a people(esp. my hostel frnds ....itz for you ) confused by a thing called userinit.exe....what is it aactually? Is it a visrus or a windows process ?if its a virus then how to handle it .....huf......

let me give the formal description of it

(1) Userinit.exe is a key process in the Windows operating system. On boot-up it manages the different start up sequences needed, such as establishing network connection and starting up the Windows shell. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated. This executable file resides in system32 folder .

(2) USERINIT.EXE :- This is the dreadful viruses haunting many .Technically its a trojan horse. Trojan.Coban2k is disguised as userinit.exe in the Windows folder .

Now the real thing ..how to remove the virus from the computer .I have seen many antiviruses not being able to detect userinit.exe (I m not offending any one ....).

Most of the people use winrar . So one way is using it . log into the system normally and using winrar browse to the windows folder .delete the userinit.exe file from it .

If that does not work ,try logging in safe mode and repeat the process. To goto safe mode press F8 at bootup to get windows boot menu and select safe mode

if that does not work too.well den the ultimate saviour is linux . take ubuntu live cd and boot into the system using livd cd . browse to the windows folder using nautilus(ubuntu counterpart of explorer) and delete the file.....

Hope this aritcle of help to you ......
